The Hazard Identification (HAZID) methodology can be summarised by the following sequential steps:

  • General description of site/location and outline operations;
  • Complete an overview of process, including design intent, design parameters and expected operating parameters;
  • Apply a guideword to act as a prompt for ‘brainstorming’;
  • Identify the potential causes of hazardous events relevant to that guideword;
  • For each event, identify the ultimate consequences associated with the events, irrespective of safeguards;
  • For each consequence, identify the potential safeguards;
  • Decide on any recommendations/ actions to eliminate or mitigate the identified hazards, if necessary;
  • Repeat until all events/ consequences have been analysed, and
  • Repeat for other guidewords as relevant;
