MCPD – are you prepared?

The EU’s Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) came into effect in December 2015 and must be implemented by each member country this month.
This legislation will fill the regulatory gap that currently exists between large combustion plants (as regulated under the Industrial Emissions Directive) and smaller appliances, and will introduce new compliance requirements on a large number (>100,000s) of organisations around Europe.
Combustion plants with a rated thermal input in excess of 1 MW (which can in some instances be the aggregated rating of multiple plants below 1 MW) will require a permit or registration to operate, and will have to comply with a new range of Emission Limit Values (ELVs) for sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and dust – with the applicable ELVs depending on whether you operate new or existing plant.
There is also a requirement to undertake periodic air emission monitoring, which can be a costly exercise.
