The difference between a minor injury and a serious injury is often a matter of chance. The main purpose of an accident investigation is for companies to learn from situations that can be improved. Caring companies will have a policy requiring as many accidents as possible, whether causing serious injury or not, to be investigated and reported. This course has been specifically designed to raise awareness in first line managers, Health and Safety Advisers, or other interested parties, the benefits in applying recognised investigation techniques.
The right attitude towards accident investigation is that of establishing the cause rather than apportioning blame, one way of helping to eliminate this is to involve and make the facts available to as many of those interested parties as possible. Developing the right attitude and ensuring a complete in-depth investigation, and making the proper recommendations is crucial in making a safer working environment. An effective accident investigation will require early interviewing of witnesses and an early examination of the scene of the accident. By achieving both of these aims, it will assist in identifying accurately the causes of accidents and lead to clear conclusions and recommendations.
