Who does Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) affect and how does it work?

The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program is pivotal in addressing the carbon footprint of airports around the world. It serves as the only internationally endorsed standard that independently evaluates and recognises airports for their efforts in carbon reduction.

Launched in 2009 by Airports Council International, the ACA Scheme is the only voluntary global carbon management standard for airports and encourages the adoption of recognised best practise for carbon management. The programme allows airports to focus on reducing their carbon emissions and ultimately become carbon neutral.

The ACA is relevant to all airports internationally (who are members of ACI), and since 2015 has expanded worldwide to cover all ACI regions. Its members range in size but all harbour the common goal of understanding, reviewing, and reducing the GHG emissions their operations create. The ACA currently has 314 accredited airports, accounting for 40% of global air passenger traffic.

Airports can participate at seven progressively rigorous levels of accreditation, and Mabbett’s team benefits from having in-house verifiers for Levels 1 – 4+ (one of the only Level 4+ ACA Verifiers in the UK):

  • Level 1 – Mapping: To determine the annual current emissions sources and levels within the operational boundary of the airport. These figures must be verified by an independent third-party.
  • Level 2 – Reduction: In addition to the above the airport must provide a carbon management procedure and show that set targets have been achieved.
  • Level 3 – Optimisation: In addition to the above the scope of the carbon footprint is expanded to include emissions from third parties operating within the airport boundary
  • Level 3+ – Neutrality: all of the above, plus offsetting remaining emissions over which the airport has control with high quality carbon credits.
  • Level 4 – Transformation: In addition to the above, the airport must define a long-term carbon management strategy oriented towards absolute emissions reductions, aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The airport must also demonstrate evidence of actively driving third parties towards delivering emissions reductions.
  • Level 4+ – Transition: in addition to the above, the airport must offset the residual carbon emissions over which the airport has control, using internationally recognised offsets.
  • Level 5: Level 5 is the topmost level in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Compliant airports must maintain a net zero balance on emissions scopes 1 and 2 and actively addressing scope 3 emissions, strengthening their approach to third-party engagement, and offset removals for residual emissions.

Independent third-party verification of an airport’s carbon footprint and supporting management plans by an approved ACA Verifier (in accordance with ISO14064) is an essential requirement for accreditation.
