COSHH Support to Northern Ireland Forklift Truck Manufacturer
Mabbett Approach and Delivery
Our local Health & Safety Team were commissioned to provide various hazardous substances specialist support tasks, to enable compliance under the COSHH (Northern Ireland) Regulations.
Projects included:
- COSHH Assessment, a review of the site chemical inventory and prioritising higher risk substances. Development of a bespoke, combined chemical inventory/COSHH Risk Assessment Register for ease of reference.
- COSHH Assessment Training, development and delivery of chemical safety awareness training for staff and COSHH Risk Assessors. Training incorporated site specific procedures.
- Occupational Hygiene Monitoring for priority substances (identified through review of hazardous health properties, typical use of the product and existing control measures) in paint line and assembly areas.
- Chemical Safety Inspections to review compliance with individual COSHH risk assessments and identifying good/bad practice to share across relevant areas.
The following approach adopted led to successful delivery of the project and retention of Mabbett for continued chemical safety consultancy services.
- Working in partnership with the client to scope the projects.
- Flexibility to meet changing project needs.
- Depth of capability to consult on related legislation such as REACH (control of high-risk chemicals) and DSEAR (explosive/flammable hazards), plus knowledge of best practice for occupational hygiene (personal exposure monitoring).
- Up-skilling of staff through training and building relationships with key staff to hold the confidence and knowledge to take ownership of site chemical management.
“I would not hesitate to recommend Mabbett. Connor provided a very professional service and was responsive to project enquiries and changing project priorities. Connor supported with updates to a bespoke, site wide register (400 chemicals), which he integrated with the COSHH Risk Assessment Register to develop a live document for risk assessment and controls for the whole plant. A ‘win-win’ for the site. ”

Project Outcomes
Working alongside the Health & Safety Officer, Mabbett delivered site specific chemical safety projects and training. We have been retained to provide on-going support with chemical safety management, namely chemical safety inspections and advice, and walk rounds to audit chemical management.
