Future revision to the ISO 14001 Standard

14th August 2012

Of interest to Mabbett clients with Environmental Management Systems (EMS) or Integrated Management Systems, there is a revision to ISO 14001, the EMS Standard in the pipeline.

ISO 14001 has been in place since 2004, and the revision has now been voted in by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).  The changes will be based on the proposed High Level Structure which is proposed for all of ISO’s management systems standards.  Changes may be reflected in updates to your EMS Manual and may include more in-depth evidence on management commitment and supply chain requirements.

The change will be transitioned over a number of years, so there is no immediate change, however, a public consultation on the draft revised ISO 14001 will be open in late 2013 with adoption and publication of the new standard expected in early 2015.

The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) has engaged with environment and sustainability professionals on the areas they would like to see revised. To view the outcomes of this engagement click on the following link to IEMA’s webpage on their position on the revisions to ISO 14001, and a copy of the new proposed High Level Structure: http://www.iema.net/iemas-position-revisions-iso-14001
