With an in-house team of energy, water and waste management specialists, engineers and health & safety consultants we can develop/implement your ISO 14001 EMS with other ISO Management Standards as an integrated management system.
We can help your organisation with the following:
An EMS gives your organisation a framework to work toward to achieve your sustainability goals, no matter your business or industry. It’s an excellent place to start reaping the benefits of increased sustainability, including reducing operational costs and carbon emissions. It’s also an excellent jumping off point for a range of other environmental compliance activity.
Environmental Management Systems Consultancy and Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Environmental Management Systems integrate with day to day business operations as well as other certifications, such as the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH).
We have extensive experience in preparing environmental permit application and with COMAH sites. Our Management Systems Consultants work in partnership with our in-house environmental permitting consultants and process safety engineers to develop a site specific EMS to meet the requirements of these regulatory regimes. We are often retained by such clients for annual reporting and maintenance activity for the EMS, bringing understanding of the nuances of COMAH in the context of an EMS. As an integrated consultancy, we are proud to help clients achieve their individual goals, and have in-house capability across a range of services.
An Environmental Management System assesses an organisation’s strengths and weaknesses, and in many cases, is a requirement for all sites operating under an environmental permit.
An environmental permit requires a written management system, and must be maintained throughout the life of the operation. This EMS is not required to be ISO 14001 Certified, however, sites may choose this route to provide an additional layer of confidence of pollution prevention and regular environmental management. To be granted a permit, you must evidence that the EMS is part of regular business activities, that staff are aware of all relevant policies and procedures that apply in their job roles. The EMS and environmental permit should align, demonstrating compliance with permit requirements.
ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and the most widely used EMS globally. It’s the principal management system standard which specifies the requirements for the formulation and maintenance of an EMS, allowing your organisation to control environmental aspects, reduce impacts and help ensure compliance.
ISO 14001 as a structure is broad enough to be able to apply to any sector or industry, while still providing an internationally recognised, specific framework for implementing relevant environmentally sustainable practices. Other benefits include:

If your business is looking for a demonstrable way to show your commitment to sustainability, ISO 14001 is an excellent place to begin. Motivation to achieve the standard may come from multiple areas – e.g. to increase tender scores for environmental management, to control and reduce rising costs of energy and waste through resource efficiency measures or to gain the ISO 14001 Certificate as recognition for environmental management already in place.
The standard is broad enough to be applicable to all industries, but the framework it supplies supports a programme of sustainability measures that benefits all businesses. From improving efficiencies, reducing costs, improving reputation and increasing leadership involvement and employee engagement, the benefits of the standard are considerable.
The new standard introduces the following changes and benefits to aligned businesses:
ISO 14001 now places a requirement on participating companies to assess climate risks (since March 2023). The ISO 14001 framework looks to assess risks related to the potential impacts of climate change, which can be used for assessing both present and future climate change risks. As risks associated with climate change can be complex to quantify in terms of short- or long-term probability. The latest ISO 14001 standard offers guidance on the use of screening assessments and impact chains, and is relevant to any organisation regardless of size, type and nature. If you need additional support with assessment of climate risks Mabbett also have UK Flood Risk and Drainage mapping support available.
Trained, competent auditors can internally audit your ISO 14001 EMS. To access ISO 14001 Internal Auditor Training, contact [sduncan@mabbett.eu Training Manager]. Certificates of training are part of the evidence trail for demonstrating competent auditors.
Many clients choose a no-fuss approach with contracting Mabbett to provide internal audit as a second party audit. This supports fulfilling requirements for completion of audits, on-time, to schedule, and bringing a second set of eyes to your processes and performance.
To gain and retain SO 14001 Certificate, your company needs to be audited by (in the UK) an UKAS approved Certification Body, or INAB Certification in the Republic of Ireland. Mabbett are not a Certification Body as our consulting services would mean this is a conflict-of-interest.
Mabbett can help with pre-Certification audit audits, internal audits and support following Certification with regular systems maintenance audits to support during and
up to annual Certification Body Surveillance audit and re-Certification audit (every 3 years).
UKAS are the UK Accreditation Service; other countries have similar organisations, usually appointed by the Government and set up to provide assurance of the quality of the Certification Bodies’ service.
ISO 14005 (which replaced BS 8555) provides guidelines for implementing an EMS in phases so that organizations can establish, implement, maintain, and improve an EMS at their own pace. It offers a flexible approach to phased implementation of ISO 14001 by breaking the requirements of ISO 14001 into separate phases, stages, and maturity levels, making the implementation of an EMS a much less daunting task – especially for small and medium sized organizations (SMEs).
